Having completed placements at hospital and worked in social care for years, I know how challenging it can be for staff to support the patients and manage information shared with families. This afternoon, a nurse was put in a situation that could have potentially been very awkward as I was reading information to my relative from her file. The nurse was not present when I asked my relative to consent to me reading this and so faced with this scenario, I was very impressed that she challenged me, in an attempt to increase my relative's right to privacy. It was not appropiate to discuss this fully at the time, as she was supporting another patient, she advised that it is "preferred relatives don't go through the file as they are confidential." I decided not to try and push this or explain the situation at the time because she was busy, and so put the folder down and spoke to her before leaving. She was very approachable, and took the time to explain to me she had my relative's best interest at heart, and apologised incase she came across rude (please reassure her this was not the case!) Thanks
"Excellent example of professionalism on ward 1a"
