On visiting the Lincoln county hospital a and e department I was surprised at the length of time it took to be seen.

The department was very quiet and there was a period of least half an hour where nobody saw any activity at all.

After a very poor consultation with a robotic triage nurse I was told that I would have to wait possibly another 2 hours to see a doctor and then longer if I needed an X-ray.

I fully appreciate that there is a need to grade the patients but what I saw was that patients with less need than my self been seen first. these patients included people that had to be fetched from out side because they were smoking. Also the foreign patients seemed to be seen first. when I was eventually seen by the wandering doctor the consultation was very poor and not very reassuring.

We strive to see patients in a timely manner, what is not always obvious to patients sat in the Waiting Room is the workload the staff are dealing with in the Resuscitation Rooms or the Majors cubicles. I apologise for the delay experienced during this visit and would like to reassure the patient that all patients are assessed according to the urgency they need to be seen by a doctor or Nurse Practitioner using a recognised triage method. I cannot comment on the presenting complaints, illness or injuries of the other patients at that time but at no time does a patients Nationality or being a smoker or non-smoker generate more urgent treatment.

This complaint will be shared with the A&E team and, whilst I am not able to identify the individuals who dealt with this patient, they will be able to reflect on the concerns conveyed.

I can fully appreciate that there is an awful lot of work which goes on in the areas that you can not see. I also am fully aware that patients that arrive by ambulance are more often in need of more urgent attention than the walking wounded in the main waiting area.

On this particular evening while waiting it was easy to work out how the staff had been organised that 2 triage nurses were initially looking at the patients and then 1 doctor was then seeing the patients.

There was a lot of time where the doctor was wondering about with no real urgency or purpose
