"Concern for care of my relative"

About: Northampton General Hospital (Acute)

(as a relative),

On visiting a relative in the stroke unit today, I found that patient in low spirits and reluctant to call for assistance from staff for anything with his call bell, which was the only way of communicating their needs. Instead my relative indicated that I should take him out of bed and put him in his wheelchair and also pass him a wee bottle so he could urinate. Now although I am a qualified trainer in moving and handling, I did not feel it was my responsibility to do this and I insisted that he press the buzzer, which he did. On eventually arriving, the 2 nurses proceeded to move him off the bed, but not following the clear instructions that had been put into action and written word-by-word, by the physios. At one point I felt myself that he was in danger of falling, I later found out from another relative that he had also persuaded them to put him to bed as he did not want to disturb the nurses. I found this highly distressing and it made me wonder if the standard of care on this unit is up to scratch or was this just a one off.
