I visited with my 4 yr old on 8 jan 14 after being referred to the childrens assessment unit by gp the same day . My boy was suffering from a high temperature and what we thought maybe a joint infection . The chap in the main reception saw I was somewhat distraught and clearly wanting to get to the department Pointed me in the right direction with a smile . On arrival on the unit from the start , staff were fantastic , straight into the assessment , chatting and explaining what they were doing , they all spoke to my little one asking him questions but not talking down or at him just because he is only 4 . Somewhat refreshing I thought seeking the views of a 4 yr old but after all he was the patient . Off for blood tests and x rays , swift and efficient , again fully kept up to date whith what was going on and what doctors were considering as a diagnosis, staff noted that my lad had not eaten and arranged for a sandwich to be brought to the unit , nothing was too much trouble , all our questions were answered and we were included in conversations regarding treatment , we left after 7 hours reassured that our little one was experiencing a common condition for children and nothing more that he should recover. that said as a precaution doctors gave us 48 hr re admission direct to the unit if we as parents felt he wasn't improving ,. How brilliant is that , thank you. Staff were the greatestvasset , thorough , professional ,friendly and knowledgeable . I'm not an NHS employee but I do work in the public sector face to face with the public in the emergency services , it's not easy , the staff on this unit have got it right in my view and I had every confidence in their ability to treat my son . Keep up the good work .
"Brilliant experience"
