"A very abrupt and belittling doctor"

About: Galloway Community Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as the patient),

For the last 8 days I have been suffering from painful earache in my left ear which has left me disorientated and lethargic. I attended a a GP appointment mid week and was prescribed medication.

Since then I have noticed no improvement and felt it was moving to my other ear and down my neck so, being as it was Sunday and no GPs were open I decided to go to a&e.

I arrived at Galloway community hospital Stranraer, and it was unknown to me that I required an appointment to attend a&e.

A nurse informed me to call NHS24 to arrange an appointment time. I contacted NHS and spent 1hr 15 on the phone to be told I’d get a call to arrange a time, as I had given all my details already to reception while waiting on the call centre to call me. 20 minutes after this call, I was called in to a room by a doctor who abruptly made it clear that my condition was not an emergency and they had more important matters to be dealing with. They told me I was to see a GP. They did not assess me in any way and stormed out the room leaving me sitting there not knowing what I was to do next.

Dear Mrs brambles,

Thank you for posting your feedback on Care Opinion. I was sorry to read that you have been suffering from painful earache in your left ear which has left you disorientated and lethargic and that you have concerns about the spread to your right ear and down your neck. Furthermore, I regret that when you attended the Emergency Department at Galloway Community Hospital you were not assessed and left unsure what to do, other than follow the advice that was given by the attending Doctor to see your General Practitioner.

A Patient Experience Officer at NHS Dumfries and Galloway is currently looking into this on your behalf and will respond directly back to you when their investigation is concluded.

I hope this course of action is acceptable to you and in the meantime, if we can support you in any way please don't hesitate to contact us at dg.patientservices@nhs.scot.

Kind regards,

James
