"Exceptional care and attention"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Emergency department Critical Care / Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Urology / Ward 4

(as a relative),

My mum recently attended A&E in Altnagelvin, she became very acutely unwell, needing surgery that night and admission to the ICU and then care in Ward 4. She was very ill and distressed.

Although A&E was extremely busy and the wait long,  staff were very attentive to her, they picked up on her symptoms quickly and done the tests required quickly. She went to theatre from there and the staff she encountered were kind and caring, even when she became gravely ill and needed to be admitted to ICU, they kept her informed and in touch with our family.

My mum's admission from theatre to ICU was extremely sudden, but staff were informative and caring, they held her hand and explained every detail, they spoke to our family every time we asked or had questions and were informative, empathetic and honest. The staff in ICU and in Ward 4 following ICU could not have done any more for mum, the Nurses and Doctors and all staff kept her well cared for and promoted her recovery at all times. They listened and acted upon worries she and our family had, they were exceptional. We could not thank them enough and our mum is at home and well thanks to the excellent care, especially in the ICU and ward 4.

Mum would like to thank all the nurses and doctors on these wards. She especially remembers Joan Staff Nurse in ICU who was the nurse looking after her when she was first admitted and stayed with her continually reassuring and keeping her safe. We as a family are eternally grateful for these amazing people and services that have given us the opportunity of many more years with our mum. Personally, as a nurse in the WHSCT, i greatly appreciate all the exceptional care and attention she received and all the support my family got.

Good afternoon Cmon81,

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. I am very pleased to hear that the Intensive Care Unit staff looked after your mum well, kept her updated and reassured. The team here work so hard to ensure all our patients are well cared for and experience a high standard of care which they deserve while critically unwell. Although it might have been a very anxious time, I am delighted we were able to make your experience a positive one.

I have passed on your kind words of appreciation to the ICU team.

I informed Joan, and she is sending her gratitude for your feedback.

Well wishes to you, your mum and all the family,

Kind Regards

Stella

Ward sister
