"Made me feel monumentally embarrassed"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital / Minor Injuries Unit

(as the patient),

I recently attended Minor Injuries Unit at Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline after sustaining an injury to my hand whilst at work that day.

When I saw the nurse practitioner, they seemed very uninterested in what I was saying and did not seem to care that I was in pain. When I was sent for an x-ray, another nurse practitioner commented that  here is another one who is fine as I walked past.

In the X-ray department no one spoke to me politely, just telling me how to place my hand for the X-ray with no regards for how I was feeling. I then waited in reception at minor injuries and the same nurse who originally saw me stuck their head around the door in front of the other patients in the waiting room and said I was fine, to take painkillers and that I could go. This was in front of everyone in reception and I was not taken to a private space to have this discussion.

This experience made me feel monumentally embarrassed because I felt I had basically been told to man up in front of everyone waiting in reception.

I had followed recommended advice by contacting NHS 24 who originally told me to contact my GP. However they advised I did need to go via NHS 24 to Minor Injuries. My injury at work was documented correctly in our accident book at work, and I was following all advice and regulations - however the experience of the lack of care I received when I attended Queen Margaret Hospital was shocking and upsetting.

I also believe that one of the reasons I was treated this way is because I am only in my 20s and I think they made an assumption I was trying to get out of work, despite the fact I had tried to tell them I had been on amended duties all day due to my injury.

Dear tigerzq55

My name is Siobhan McIlroy and I am the Head of Patient Experience. NHS Fife welcomes all feedback, so thank you for taking the time to post on Care Opinion. I am sorry for the delay in you receiving a response.

I am sorry that you did not have a positive experience when you attended the Minor Injuries Unit at QMH. This is not the standard of care of behaviour we would expect or want for our patients.

Attending hospital can be a very stressful time and painful especially if you have suffered an injury. We want all our patients to be treated with dignity and respect and to be warmly welcomed during their hospital visit and again I am sorry this is not what you experienced. Nobody should be embarrassed and I understand how upsetting this must have been for you.

If you wish to discuss this further please do not hesitate in contacting me at siobhan.mcilroy@nhs.scot and if you put "made me feel monumentally embarrassed" in the subject heading. I hope you had feels better and you are recovering well.

Thank you again for sharing your story, best wishes and take care, Siobhan
