"I received impeccable care by the midwife team."

About: The Princess Royal Maternity Unit / Maternity care (wards 68, 72 &73)

(as the patient),

I was recently an inpatient at Princess Royal Maternity Unit for the delivery of my first child. I cannot fault the care I received during this time.

I was originally admitted during early labour for progression monitoring and pain relief. The team on the ward were thoughtful and incredibly caring, running me constant baths and supporting me during this time.

When things did not progress according to plan, I was moved to the labour ward where I received impeccable care by the midwife team. Over 14 hours, I could not have asked for more compassionate treatment.

I felt my wishes were listened to and the team worked incredibly hard to provide a safe birth as close to my wishes as possible. Unfortunately, when it became apparent that things were not going according to plan, I was given clear options from the team and their communication throughout was excellent.

I felt I had a positive birthing experience despite things not going as anticipated and felt that I received an incredibly high standard of care from both the midwifes and medical staff.

Following the birth I was kept on the post natal ward for two days to facilitate my wishes to successfully breast feed my baby despite a slow start and the team were very helpful in getting me to achieve this.

The two points I would suggest for improvement would be the quality of the food provided in the separate kitchens they were sub par and it would be nice to have an area for patients/infants/guest to sit as the only facility currently available is around the patient bed which, in a 6 bed dorm makes for quite a cramped/hot/noisy and chaotic experience.

Overall, could not fault the care I received from all the teams and am so grateful to all those who were apart of my daughters safe delivery.

Dear S.R.,

Congratulations on the birth of your first baby. I hope you are all settling into family life and are managing to get some sleep. Thank you for taking the time out to share your experience. I am so heartened to hear that you had a supportive journey even when things did not go to plan. Thank you also for your comments regarding the catering and I will pass these onto the relevant department.

Best wishes,

Tracy Orr
