"Mum's at home and hospital care"

About: Clydesdale Locality Support Service / Care at Home General practices in Lanarkshire Kello Hospital The Lanarkshire Beatson University Hospital Hairmyres / Ophthalmology University Hospital Wishaw / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a relative),

My mum had daily Homecare from 2019, when she fell and broke her right arm, which was never fixed by NHS.

She had fantastic care from Dr Chia, at Wishaw General, who saw my mum well after the required period. She was her longest living patient.

The staff at Beatson in Glasgow and Beatson Outreach at Monklands Hospital were professional, caring, positive and supportive. They are highly skilled people. We were delighted and grateful for all their care. The treatment extended mum’s life by 4 years. The care was exemplary and first class.

The orthopaedic surgeon, however, let her down and we were angry and disappointed, as mum lived for 4 years with her right broken arm in a brace. It affected her sleep, her balance and daily life.

In September, 2023, mum had a cataract operation at Hairmyers in East Kilbride. She was over the moon by regaining her sight and was able to start reading again - something she had missed. She spoke so highly of the treatment and care she had received. My mum was always so proud of having worked herself in the NHS - in the Board of Management, in the eye clinic and A & E in Law Hospital. She was so happy to be able to see again. It was like a miracle.

Laterally, in 2023, her health deteriorated after a Covid vaccination. She spent weeks in bed. Homecare was increased to three times a day. I cannot thank Lorraine and her team of Lanark Homecare enough. Her regulars were her favourites and provided personal care, food, friendship and humour. I was so grateful and thankful for their help and support. Two of the girls even visited her in Kello Hospital and attended her funeral.

Our local GPs had regular phone appointments and prescriptions, but Dr Hughes made a brilliant decision to find mum a bed at Kello Hospital, where she spent the last two weeks of her life.

Every one of the Kello Hospital staff is welcoming, friendly, caring and professional. Audrey runs the hospital so wonderfully well. The caring culture meets patients and families at the door and continues in all aspects of care. The personal and professional approach by all staff is respectful, empathetic and compassionate. Mum’s health seemed to be improving with the exceptional care at Kello Hospital and pain was being managed. Although none of us really knew that these were her last few days, as they were so positive, mum passed away. Mum was in her nineties.

I am so eternally grateful to Audrey, Lindsay and all the staff, who were just so caring and compassionate. I couldn’t have managed it at home on my own with mum, as their professional experience and expertise were required.

Dear Scott24,

Please accept my condolences for the passing of your mother.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback of your GP practice.

I am so pleased to hear that you and your mum were well supported by the GP practice with appointments and ensuring prescriptions were filled, as well as finding her a bed in Kello hospital.

Unfortunately GPs are independent contractors and as such are not registered to respond to feedback on Care Opinion. When you are able, could you contact the practice manager to pass on your kind words about Dr Hughes, and to ensure they get this feedback?

Sending you peace and comfort at this difficult time.

Kind Regards,

Jenni

Dear Scott24

My sincere condolences are passed to you following the death of your mum.

I note that your mum's broken arm was not fixed by orthopaedics and this affected her sleep and daily life. This must have been very difficult and debilitating and I am sorry that a more permanent solution was not offered.

You have also shared how positive her cataract surgery was in 2023. The team will be pleased to know that your mum spoke highly of the treatment she received and benefitted from this operation.

I see that your mum worked for the NHS, in management, the eye clinic and A&E at Law house. She obviously had a great deal of experience and knowledge and it is good to know that she was so happy with the ophthalmology service.

You have taken the time to share your mum's journey of care and this is much appreciated by the many teams and staff that you have kindly mentioned. Thank you.

Kind regards

Lise

I have passed on your feedback to Lorraine who will be happy to share this with the rest of the care team who supported your Mum.
