My health visitor referred me to the Maternity & Neonatal Psychological Interventions Service as I was suffering from separation anxiety on the back of a traumatic experience following the birth of my daughter.
I met with the psychologist Morven who quite quickly identified I was actually suffering from PTSD. She was extremely calm and patient, allowing me time to talk through the extremely emotional situation I was in and asked questions which encouraged me to delve deeper into how I was feeling and help process and understand it better.
Morven suggested 2 methods I could try to help me move forward and shared information on both so I could decide myself which was best. I decided to try EMDR.
On our third session together I arrived feeling nervous and apprehensive but full of hope that trying this method would help me. I still can't quite believe how quickly it happened, it was such a bizarre experience but I left that room feeling physically lighter, like a huge weight had been removed from my shoulders and chest; it was incredible.
I arranged a follow up session so we could discuss how I had felt following the EMDR then another a month later as it felt too good to be true and I was nervous that something would trigger me and take me back but that didn't happen.
On the lead up to my daughter's first birthday I was anxious as it was the anniversary of a really difficult time, Morven offered to meet with me again after that day to talk through how it had been and how to deal with feeling like this in the future, which was really helpful.
This service is amazing, I honestly don't know where I'd be without the support I received; I may not have been able to return to work. I can't thank Morven enough. I hope all mums who need this care are directed to this team.
