Stracathro surgical unit is a special place. This was my second hip surgery and like the first I can honestly say the care I received was excellent. In between the hip surgeries I had an ankle replacement at a private hospital, and comparing the two I am able to report that the care at Stracathro was far superior- (apart from the food!)
I recognised most of the staff which was lovely and this helped to relax me as I was quite nervous. The staff all communicated really well with both the patients and their colleagues. The atmosphere is calm and good humoured even though the work they all do is relentless. I am in awe of their profession and the attention they give, all the patients in the ward are in a vulnerable condition post surgery and I always felt in safe hands.
Like last time the only thing that could have been better was the food. Fortunately I didn't have much of an appetite because there was very little that I wanted to eat. I realise that the food budget is limited but it wouldn't take much to improve it.....There was little nutritional value in any of the choices and at a time when food can help recovery it is sad that was the case. For instance there was some vegetable soup that was so salty it was inedible. Fortunately I had brought some supplies from home, and as I said I wasn't very hungry.
So apart for the food I would award a big gold star to everyone in the surgical department.
