"Extremely disappointed with how we were treated"

About: Antrim Area Hospital / Accidents & Emergency

(as a parent/guardian),

My Daughter has Autism, sensory issues, speech difficulties and ADHD. Has really bad chicken pox. Our GP saw her and told us to take her to Antrim A&E as her temperature would not come down with medicines.

When we were seen in PEDs, the nurse told me that there will be temps with Chicken pox in a tone as if what where we there for. I told them my daughter was autistic but the nurse proceeded to do a pick test for blood sugar without even explaining to my daughter what was about to happen. This upset her.

I got her settled and then waited to be seen by medical staff.  With no issues the Dr was very kind and understanding of her needs.

Later whilst trying to check her temperature, a nurse then pushed the thermometer into her ear which she has chicken pox in, enough to hurt her and she responded by grabbing the thermometer to which the nurse put a finger into her face and told her not to break it. This could have been avoided with a bit of care.

I am extremely disappointed with how we were treated in this instance as I have had other very positive experiences in the same place.

My daughter was upset at being in hospital and feeling very unwell, she was crying out loud as she does when she is upset and distressed   This prompted the deputy sister to enter the room to tell my daughter to be quiet as they have other children to look after.  If only it was that simple with an autistic child.
