"Supported my daughter to advocate for herself"

About: Sidwell Street Clinic / Exeter Sexual Health

(as a parent/guardian),

I am a carer for my adult daughter who has epilepsy and is required to use contraception in order to obtain her anti-seizure medication. The transition to adult services is difficult enough without having this additional burden, which also requires highly specialist treatment. General clinic settings are always very difficult to navigate (busy, unpredictable and rarely punctual) and this was our first visit to the clinic, which makes it more stressful.

Although we had to wait almost an hour to be seen despite booking an appointment, I am so glad we persevered as the clinician we saw was exceptional. She understood my daughter’s complex situation and went above and beyond to put her at ease, to explain clearly and to honour her choices - which didn’t follow the standard protocol. She supported my daughter to advocate for herself and was both incredibly professional and kind.

Dear marsnd76,

Thanks for taking the time to leave feedback. I'm so sorry to hear you had to wait for an hour, our clinicians will always take the time to support each patient individually and so sometimes it can overrun. I am so pleased to hear that you had a positive experience and that your daughter was able to advocate for herself too. Our clinicians will always tailor their care to the individual. If there is anything further we can help you with in the future, please call us on 0300 303 3989.

Kind regards

Kathryn
