"The whole procedure was quick, efficient and pain free"

About: St John's Hospital / Day Surgery Unit St John's Hospital / Urology

(as a service user),

I recently attended ward12/ambulatory care for bladder botox today. What an asset this new treatment area is ! No long waiting for theatre,  in and out in 30 minutes. Greeted and treated by friendly, caring staff throughout.

It must be proving so cost effective and will no doubt cut waiting list times dramatically. No theatre prep taking up nursing time, 2 nurses instead of 6 in theatre, no recovery room time  and no longer waiting your turn and occupying a bed for hours.

Bladder Botox is vital for me as it is life changing and to have this service fills me with hope that  future treatments will be carried out timeously.

Thank you Dr Wilkens and all staff involved for your care . The whole procedure was quick, efficient and pain free . I was treated with utmost respect and dignity. No worse than a visit to the dentist ….

Previously it was a procedure which filled me with anxiety and fear that demand on beds meant it could be cancelled or postponed . This new ambulatory care model is definitely the way forward for treatments / procedures such as these .

Thank you again to all involved in my care. Good Luck !

Dear Meandmesh

Firstly can I thank you dearly for the very positive and heartfelt feedback you have given us here at the Gynaecology Ambulatory Care Suite/Ward 12 within St John's Hospital. The team here are all very proud to be delivering such a vital procedure to patients who have often been waiting long periods of time for such a 'life changing' procedure.

The service is very new, and it has taken great patience and planning for all involved. I must say it is lovely to learn about the experience from yourself as one of the first patient journey within the service, that the experience has been timely, efficient and most importantly dignified for you. The team and I understand greatly, how much the procedure means to patients and how pivotal it can be in regaining independence in life. We absolutely welcome feedback in our area and as the Deputy Charge Nurse for this clinical area I am delighted that our staff greeted you with a caring and friendly attitude. I will be sure to pass your feedback on to the team and hope you feel the benefit from your treatment going forward.

Thank you again for taking time out to provide us with feedback

Best wishes

Deputy Charge Nurse

Ambulatory Care Suite/Ward 12-St John's Hospital

Update posted by Meandmesh (a service user)

This treatment is life changing for me because it means I am no longer up to the toilet 5/6 times a night to void, often being incontinent before I get to the toilet. This then means I have to wash and change underwear and have a disrupted sleep pattern. This in turn causes low mood. After Botox I am able to go out without the fear of being incontinent in a public place or not being able to find a toilet in time. I’m also able to socialise and not have to limit my fluid intake. Urinary incontinence impacts every aspect of my daily life, dignity, intimacy etc. not to mention frequent UTI’s and regular courses of antibiotics ( which have their own side effects I.e. diarrhoea, thrush etc and I don’t think a lot of people realise this.

Because of other medical issues I am unable to self catheterise should I go into retention post Botox and this is the reason I only get a half dose and need it more frequently ( at least 6 monthly). Hopefully with new service my treatment will not be delayed as it has in the past. My sincere thanks to all involved.
