"The staff were friendly, attentive and helpful"

About: North Devon District Hospital / General surgery

(as a service user),

I was only given 10 days notice, so not a lot of time to worry about it! I had my right hip replaced 14 years ago, but I know that a lot has changed in that time. The biggest being, a spinal and sedation rather than a spinal and general. This scared me silly and I was very anxious and nervous about it. And I echoed this to my consultant, pre op nurse and anaesthetist. I didn’t want to see, hear or feel a thing!

My fears were allayed and the anaesthetist made it happen. I was ok. I was first in. In theatre at 0830, in recovery at 1030, back on the ward for 1100, with tea and toast supplied, fed lunch at 1200, up and dressed by 1400, seen by physio at 1600, walking stairs at 1700 and home by 1800! Amazing. I was a bit light headed and wobbly with a very numb bum to begin with, but I was amazed how well I felt and how mobile I was so soon after a major op like that. The staff were very friendly, attentive and helpful, nothing was too much trouble and I wanted for nothing. My consultant also came to see me at the end of his day, to see if I was alright and I was very much alright and very appreciative. No arthritic pain at all! Thank you so very much.

Dear conditionerds53,

Thank you for taking the time to post your response following your recent total hip replacement with us on Jubilee ward.

I am pleased to hear that your 'fears were allayed', and that you found the whole experience rewarding.

By the sound of all of your timings, you have made a remarkable recovery, especially with such short notice for your surgery.

Recovering from major surgery such as yours, we strive to make patients feel as comfortable as possible and to mobilise patients within a time period to assist in a timely recovery.

Thank you for your very kind words regarding the staff, we all work very hard to make sure that patients are cared for with compassion and kindness, allowing time for recovery. I will pass on your comments to staff and may we all wish you a remarkable, pain free recovery, and all of the best for the future.

Kind Regards

Julie Pragnell
