I was brought to Victoria Hospital in Kirkaldy via ambulance after ringing 999 due to fainting, vomiting and severe pain. The ambulance arrived within 15 minutes. I was blue lighted to Kirkaldy, admitted via A&E and immediately taken through to surgery to have my fallopian tube removed. I had lost 4.5litres of blood via internal bleeding, spent 2 days in intensive care and then 5 on the gynaecology ward. It has taken me some time to post this because it was an incredibly traumatic event and I almost died while also losing our baby.
I am writing this to highlight the exceptional care I received throughout this process. The ambulance staff were patient, skilled and comforting and I only wish I could remember their names. The A&E team were also exceptional given the panicked nature of my admission and the large crowd of people working on me. Of course those who operated on me and cared for me in ICU also did a fantastic job, although I don’t remember much about this time.
The most exceptional part for me however, were the nurses in the gynaecology ward. I was absolutely terrified of everything after finding out the extent of what had happened, multiple blood transfusions, how close I was to dying etc. Every raised heart rate, every pain, every noise gave me a fright and I was an anxious mess.
The level of care I experienced on this ward is something I will never forget and in particular a nurse named Jo, she was an absolute angel and made me feel so safe and looked after. Nothing was ever too much or too silly to ask. I loved when she was working shifts and would always love when she came and talked to me. She never made me feel belittled when my anxiety was through the roof.
Another wonderful nurse was named Ruth. I actually felt so safe and cared for in the ward that I was dreading going home as I worried something bad would happen in the outside world after a near death experience, without the care of the nurses in this ward.
It takes a particularly caring and compassionate person to work on a sensitive ward and remain so human while also being so composed and reassuring. A huge thank you to everyone who I had caring for me. It truly makes you appreciate the NHS in times of emergency! I have my life to show for it!
