"Cognitive Therapy Group"

About: Community Mental Health / Penwith ICMHT

(as a relative),

My Mum was invited to join the cognitive therapy group after her diagnosis of Alzheimers.

Alison who ran the group telephoned to tell me about it and to ask if mum would be interested in going. I was unsure as Mum hadn’t attended any social events on her own for a lot of years. She was initially apprehensive about going along, but Alison reassured us that it was only going to be a small group. From the very first session my mum loved it, she came away buzzing, which was something we hadn’t seen for a very long time. It was comforting for her as she knew everybody there was suffering the same condition and she didn’t therefore feel out of place or embarrassed.

It was a very small group, plus Alison and a helper, Kelly. Both ladies were lovely and very encouraging. They chatted, did puzzles and things just to encourage them to think, plus they laughed a lot (which can only be a good thing). They were set homework which Mum enjoyed doing and then discussed the homework and everyone’s answers at the next session.

It has been a really good thing for my Mum. She says she feels her memory has improved and it has given her a lot more confidence. She is very sad that the sessions have now ended, but would attend them again in a heartbeat.

I would like to thank Alison and Kelly for all their obvious hard work in arranging each session and for all their help and encouragement to the group.
