"Blood Test"

About: The Fryern Surgery

(as a service user),

I went to give blood but my finger prick test showed I was anaemic, This is unusual as I have given 51 times in the past and it has never happened before. They gave me a leaflet with my reading on to take to the doctors (Fryern Surgery Chandlers Ford) and said I should ask for a blood test. They said I should do this before seeing a doctor with the results.

The member of staff on reception told me to go to a pharmacy and buy iron tablets (I didn't know they were allowed to give this advice without any knowledge of my medical history). I couldn't have a test without seeing the doctor first and they gave me an an appointment in just over a month's time. I cannot give blood again for 12 months unless my reading is back to normal, in which case I can let the blood service know and it is 3 months.

Firstly, I think this is a waste of a doctors appointment because if I have a normal reading I will not need to see them. I can't help thinking a nurse could have ordered a blood test. Secondly, is a letter from another healthcare professional not enough to get a test done?

I feel this is obstructing the Blood service from a donation, if I could have had a blood test more quickly, it is possible I could have been donating in 3 months' time. If there is a genuine worry about stomach ulcers or cancer (I am in my 50s) should I not be seen faster than a month's time?
