"The level of care is simply excellent"

About: Maternity care (Ward 31) / Labour suite maternity Royal Alexandra Hospital / Maternity care (Ward 31) Vale of Leven General Hospital / Maternity care

(as a service user),

I recently gave birth to my son, following a balloon and oxy induction. The staff at The Vale of Leven and RAH were nothing short of phenomenal throughout my pregnancy and labour.

Midwives Yvonne and Sam (Vale) were thoroughly professional at every appointment, with Yvonne always explaining my options and  happy to discuss any new information presented by the Consultant. I went to my induction feeling prepared with the information given to me and relaxed due knowing that my baby was well cared for and no stone is left unturned by Yvonne!

I can only compare my experience to that of my first pregnancy in England, and feel the level of care at the Vale is simply excellent. I get the sense that staff strive for a risk-free culture rather than to fire fight as situations present.

Likewise at RAH, from Dr Gabb who induced me, to the attending midwives (Janet, Holly and Sammia), a sense of professionalism ran through the ward. Each gave thought to my feelings and fears at any given point and calmed me appropriately, with Holly and Sammia providing some excellent coping skills for contractions. Their bedside manner was personable and they explained what was happening in layman’s terms for me.

Janet was quick to recognise that I was worried about childcare and explained the likely timeframes/pathways for an induction so I could organise appropriate childcare, instantly calming me.

I went into my third and final labour feeling prepared. This gave me a sense of calm and autonomy over the situation which made for the only labour that I have come away from feeling proud of. Likewise, without any shame, confusion over what had just happened or trauma, my postpartum recovery has been incredibly quick. I am ever grateful to the staff of the Vale and RAH for enabling this outcome.

Congratulations Happybirth24 on the birth of your son. This has been a wonderful post to read and great to see phenomenal support across both units at VOL and RAH. I will share this with both teams and the individual you have mentioned by name. Thank you for taking the time to share your journey with us on Care Opinion.

Kindest Regards,
