"Neurology appointment for my son"

About: Intellectual Developmental Disabilities /Learning Disability Services - Community / Epilepsy Service

(as a parent/guardian),

It's a rather long story but my son who is a young adult with complex needs has fallen through the net and not been under neurology for two years due to two residential house moves across three counties.

Now he is under Nottingham epilepsy team and I cannot thank LF the LD Epilepsy Nurse, enough for taking on board all the circumstances and history of his case. She made contact with me before the appointment and provided reassurances that I could be included in the consultation even though I live in a different area and could not attend in person - which had been a worry for me.

Care staff brought my son to the appointment and it could have been quite stressful/difficult for him but with reasonable adjustments (particularly his communication) and acknowledgement of his ability to engage it was a great success. Which is very positive in terms of building his confidence for any future hospital visits.

I feel very relieved that there is now skilled oversight of his epilepsy management and feel sure that this will positively impact the understanding/support that he receives from the staff team at his residential home which in turn will significantly improve his health and wellbeing. I am very grateful.

Hi,

Thank you for your feedback and very kind and supportive comments. I will share this with the Epilepsy Team members. It is very important to us as an a Epilepsy Service for people with Intellectual Disabilities to offer a comprehensive and inclusive service for patients, families and carers.

Kind regards

Lisa
