"Health support workers"

About: Adult mental health / Dunnottar Ward

(as the patient),

I have recently been in Dunnotar Ward. I watched three support workers sitting in the office chatting and messing around instead of being out in the day room trying to engage with the patients. None of the staff I could see appeared to be taking the patients on or encouraging them to take part in some activity. They seemed to be being paid to sit around.

Apart from serving meals and taking patients out for cigarettes I’m didn't see any other work being done.

Not all support staff were like this - some were brilliant at engaging and encouraging people to try things , some were always cheerful and chatty, but a lot of them appeared to see this as a case of turning up to get paid.
