"Exceptional care"

About: Gynaecology / Hysteroscopy Services

(as the patient),

I attended Perth Royal Infirmary (Gynaecology Department)  for my Hysteroscopy appointment.  I was extremely anxious and nervous about this appointment.  But as soon as my husband and I arrived in the department we were made to feel reassured.

Jane the charge nurse took us to a room and told us what the procedure would be, helping with any questions we may have had.  Jane explained how long the appointment would roughly last and my husband decided to go and come back later.

I then met Sarah and medical student Chloe, both were extremely helpful and reassured me about the procedure, explaining that if I was not happy or felt uncomfortable at any time to just let them know.  Sarah answered all my questions and explained there would be other nurses in the room and what their roles in the procedure would be.  We then proceeded along to the room where the hysteroscopy would take place and I met Donna and Kirsteen, Donna was my nurse to help me and she explained what was happening, making me feel reassured and very comfortable. She gave me a stress ball and told me I could have gas and air if I needed, this had also been explained to me by Jane and Sarah previously.  Donna even let me hold her hand and squeeze it, when needed, such a personal thing to do, when feeling so low and unsure about everything that was happening.  Sarah explained everything that she was doing and gave me a local anaesthetic, which I must admit helped enormously, making the procedure a lot easier than I had anticipated.

The whole team were extremely helpful and very caring in every aspect of my procedure.  I was cared for right to the very end of my procedure and taken back to my room. My husband had arrived back and the nurses brought him along to the room, Jane came and made a cup of tea (much appreciated and needed) and some biscuits and told us to take as much time to recover as was needed.  I left the hospital in a much different frame of mind than when I went in and if for any reason I needed to get a Hysteroscopy again, I know I would be in safe hands.

These nurses/specialist nurses are all a credit to Perth Royal Infirmary Gynaecology department.  All the nurses I have dealt with in the 2 visits I have had were caring, friendly and extremely helpful.  Thank you to the whole team for their help and making my procedure so much more bearable to cope with.  I know a lot of people going to get this procedure done will be nervous and anxious but you are in safe and caring hands.

Dear starww47

Thank you for sharing your experience of attending the Hysteroscopy clinic at Perth Royal Infirmary.

We really do appreciate what a worrying and anxious time it is for our patients attending these types of appointments and we strive to deliver the care in an environment which helps to relax and inform our patients and it is always gratifying and encouraging to hear when we have achieved just that.

I hope you have now recovered and I wish you all the best for the future.

Thank you again

Denise Marshall, Senior Charge Nurse, Gynaecology and Early Pregnancy Outpatient Services.
