"Patient was again discharged with no follow up"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as a relative),

Patient had first ever seizure which was very violent and lasted for over 15 minutes. They were taken to RAH by Ambulance. Patient had been experiencing cognitive and memory issues but had undergone no tests, awaiting Neurology referral and MRI.

Given the development of the seizure and the deterioration of the patient’s memory after the seizure, the family asked for MRI to be done while in RAH. Family were told by doctor in the A&E department at the RAH that the hospital does not have a MRI machine. They went on to say only the Queen Elizabeth hospital has one so the patient will be discharged and will just have to wait for the neurology appointment and eventually get MRI at that hospital. After blood tests and nothing more the patient was discharged after 7 hours in A&E with no further information not even a leaflet. Family were devastated no MRI was done but believed the doctor when he said the RAH does not have MRI machine.

2 months later patient and family are back in RAH via ambulance as patient has another unexplained violent seizure. Patient told this time she will be kept in and MRI will be done. Family delighted assuming she will be moved to Queen Elizabeth. Only while family sat in cafe did they notice sign in hospital for ‘MRI’. It feels like the doctor in A&E had blatantly lied to them. Family trusted their word and didn’t push and look where it got them. Patient’s condition only deteriorating and still no MRI done. Appalled at this behaviour from a doctor.

Patient is working in healthcare and has dedicated decades of her life to the NHS and caring for others. It seems this is the thanks they get.

Patient never got MRI in the end. Staff at the RAH seen she had had her initial appointment with Neurology at Queen Elizabeth and told family no MRI would be done anymore. Patient was again discharged with no follow up, no medication, no support and no answers.

It is now April and we still await MRI. Lets only hope whatever is wrong is still treatable.

Dear re-351

I am sorry that the access to MRI here at the RAH was not fully explained. This must be a frightening and frustrating time. Whilst there is an MRI scanner on our site it it not reserved for use by the Emergency Department.

Without additional information, I am unable to comment further as follow up you describe in your post is with Neurology.

I offer this explanation on behalf of the Emergency Department.

Gerry

Thank you for your response.

While I appreciate that not everyone gets everything right all the time and that the nature of A&E is extremely high pressure, I would recommend the staff have more delicacy in their approach and do not lie.

The member of staff told us the RAH has no MRI machine. Not that it is unavailable. So this was false information.

We were then discharged without as little as a leaflet for information on seizures and how to cope with any future ones.

The information above refers to two separate visits to A&E. The first time we were lied to about the MRI. The second time (which your comment about Neurology relates to) explains how we came to discover that the a&e doctor lied to us about the MRI machine. This is because a different A&E doctor told us the patient will be kept in and MRI would be done.

In the end the MRI was never done and we still wait desperate for answers. If you need details about Neurology please give me details and I can provide?

However the point raised above is that we were lied to which is unacceptable and I do not feel your response addresses that.

Dear re-351

I can only comment on the A&E team involvement and unable to offer Neurology follow up information.

I'm sorry my explanation around the accessing of MRI did not address your post fully. I do hope I can offer reassurance that your post has been shared with the whole team to learn from what has been raised around appropriate information regarding MRI and appropriate information/leaflet being given.

Many thanks

Gerry

Hi Gerry

Thanks for your prompt response.

As advised, it was an A&E doctor who told us there is no MRI machine in the entire RAH building. They told us this multiple times. That is the point I need addressed.

Thanks

Thank you re-351

As soon as your post arrived, I shared with the whole A&E team. We want to avoid this mis-communication occurring again and by reinforcing what you raised, have achieved this.

The accessing and awareness of MRI on the RAH site has been reinforced with all staff.

Thank you for highlighting this and allowing me to offer explanation.

Gerry
