"It was not a nice experience"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Accident & Emergency Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Xrays and Scans

(as a service user),

I recently  had to say in the QE for a few days. I am now recovering at home.

I am in my 80s, and was admitted via A&E after a fall. It was 9 hours before I was admitted. I then received an Xray. The staff in radiology were very kind and they gave me a painkiller to help me get in position for the xray of my hip. The results came back with no broken bones but the pain was still horrific. I wanted to comment on several things.

Most importantly, I need to take a water tablet and once I was admitted to the ward it took over 4 hours for this to be prescribed to me. I was in agony crying on the trolly by the reception area. I needed that medication on time and it should have been available a lot sooner. I also take other medications that I also did not get that day.

I was in a side room on floor 103 and I was very isolated during my stay. The staff only came in to treat me. I needed to take a shower during my stay but nobody would help me or stay outside to make sure I didn’t fall (I had fallen in the shower and this had lead to this admission). I couldn’t have a shower until my son came and he waited outside the door. But as soon as I started showering the drain was blocked and the water flooded the shower room and out onto the corridor so I had to turn it off. My son cleared up the water with my towel and it took a long time to get replacement towel.

During my stay I gave a number of blood samples, urine samples and swabs but I never saw the results of any of these and was not given any information about them. I know I can ask the records department for these but I thought I would tell you here too.

My arms have two fatty lumps on them and when they were examined by a doctor they were very rough with me and I am still in pain now, I asked for an x-ray on my arm/shoulder but was told it was not needed.

Throughout my stay I had to ask for food and for a cup of tea, and for my water to be changed. At admittance I went for 24 hours without proper meal.

I was glad to leave the hospital, especially because of how isolated I felt. It was not a nice experience

If could make one suggestion it would be to split the doctors in A&E, with some dealing with the walk in and other dealing with those from other hospitals or admitted via ambulance

Dear indigohp33,

thank you for taking the time to submit a care opinion. I’m sorry that it was not a nice experience for you. Care opinion doesn’t share personal details, if you’d like to email me directly at karen.hughes@ggc.scot.nhs.uk I will look into this further. I appreciate your comments about the emergency department medical staff being split into seeing different patients, we doing in fact have a separate minor injury unit that is specifically for minor falls/trips/wounds etc, unfortunately patients with hip injuries cannot be seen there as we are unable to take patients who require X-rays on trolleys outside the unit due to health and safety reasons. Our radiology department requires all patients who require hip X-rays to be on trolleys, I am sorry this caused a delay in your assessment. We are an extremely busy department and we do try to get patients seen as soon as we possibly can, I am sorry we were unable to on this occasion. I will pass on your other comments to the relevant staff. I hope you are doing well at home and your hip pain has settled.

With kind regards,

Karen
