"My granny's fall"

About: Cairn Housing Association Ltd General practices in Fife NHS Fife Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as a relative),

My gran has been struggling with worsening mobility and increased leg pain in the last few weeks which has been getting her down. As a war generation baby she is a tough cookie in her mid eighties, but understandably this has been wearing on her.

The GP visited on 2 occasions in the last few weeks, despite my gran being reluctant to initially phone for help, to essentially be told to continue with her painkillers as she was, and that it's probably her known osteoarthritis and previous sciatica causing the issue.

She accepted that there was little that could be done, so carried on as usual and was religiously taking her pain medicines as always.

Last Friday, we got a call from my gran's sheltered housing warden to say she had been found on her bathroom floor by her carers, and seemed to have fallen/collapsed during the night. Nobody was sure how long she had been there and she was unable to move or help herself in any way, so was lying there. It appears she had woken up during the night due to the pain in her leg, and tried to get up to find painkillers and never quite managed.

Thankfully, the warden called for an ambulance promptly and called us to inform us of the events. The two paramedics Graham and Robin were first class, and treated my gran with complete dignity and respect. She was obviously shaken up and a bit disorientated, and they were nothing but kind to her, and carefully assisted her to stand up and take her into hospital for ongoing assessment.

Thankfully I have not had much previous experience with paramedics or having to be assisted by ambulance crew, but they were very friendly and professional in order to get my gran into a place of safety, and were very reassuring to us as family.

Thank you both for your kindness at a stressful and worrying time.

Dear grannywithag30

Thank you for sharing your story. It is always a worry when an elderly relative has a fall so I am glad you are happy with the care received from Graham and Robin.

If you would like me to pass on your thanks to them may I ask that you contact our Patient Experience Team at sas.feedback@nhs.scot with your name, Care Opinion name, your granny's name and the address and date we attended.

I do hope she is recovering well.

Kindest regards

David

Dear grannywithag30

My name is Siobhan McIlroy and I am the Head of Patient Experience. NHS Fife welcomes all feedback, so thank you for taking the time to post on Care Opinion. I am sorry for the delay in you receiving a response.

I am sorry to hear that your gran was struggling with worsening mobility and increased leg pain this must have been so frustrating for her. I can see from your description that she is a strong, independent, stoic lady (she sounds fantastic!).

I am sorry the pain killers didn't help relieve her pain and that she had a fall. This must have been very worrying for you all and frightening for your gran.

I hope your gran is recovering well.

Thank you again for sharing your story, best wishes and take care, Siobhan
