My mother, who has dementia, was hospitalised in an acute setting for a traumatic injury. She was in pain physically and very confused by her new surroundings.
Early in Mum’s stay, a member of the Dementia Champion team came in for a spontaneous chat about their service and to become acquainted with Mum. The warmth, humour and knowledge with which the Dementia Champion, Sheila, engaged Mum and the wider family was instrumental in alleviating the family’s anxiety and giving Mum some moments of distraction and fun.
We were introduced to the rest of the Dementia Champions quickly and they have made an enormous difference to Mum’s wellbeing during this admission. The DC team have washed Mum’s hair; showered her; helped her to mobilise; advocated on Mum’s behalf and ensured her pain was minimised; sang songs; massaged Mum’s hands; played games; made tea, toast and ensured Mum has eaten when family have not been there.
They have answered our questions around the progression of Mum’s dementia as we have experienced new changes and offered professional yet immensely reassuring and genuinely caring support.
During a previous admission to the same hospital, the DC service was not available so the contrast between this hospital stay and the last is stark: Mum appears more settled and happier, while our family has been able to develop a more open partnership with ward staff with the encouragement of the Dementia Champion team.
"Dementia Champions’ excellent care for our mother"
