"Dementia Champions’ excellent care for our mother"

About: Western Health & Social Care Trust / Dementia companion service

(as a relative),

My mother, who has dementia, was hospitalised in an acute setting for a traumatic injury. She was in pain physically and very confused by her new surroundings.

Early in Mum’s stay, a member of the Dementia Champion team came in for a spontaneous chat about their service and to become acquainted with Mum. The warmth, humour and knowledge with which the Dementia Champion, Sheila, engaged Mum and the wider family was instrumental in alleviating the family’s anxiety and giving Mum some moments of distraction and fun.

We were introduced to the rest of the Dementia Champions quickly and they have made an enormous difference to Mum’s wellbeing during this admission. The DC team have washed Mum’s hair; showered her; helped her to mobilise; advocated on Mum’s behalf and ensured her pain was minimised; sang songs; massaged Mum’s hands; played games; made tea, toast and ensured Mum has eaten when family have not been there.

They have answered our questions around the progression of Mum’s dementia as we have experienced new changes and offered professional yet immensely reassuring and genuinely caring support.

During a previous admission to the same hospital, the DC service was not available so the contrast between this hospital stay and the last is stark: Mum appears more settled and happier, while our family has been able to develop a more open partnership with ward staff with the encouragement of the Dementia Champion team.

Dear CMBR

My name is Nicola Hayes and I am the Dementia Service Improvement Lead for Acute Hospital and I manage the Dementia Companion Service.

Thank you for your feedback story with regards to ‘Dementia Champions excellent care for our mother’ and thank you for taking the time to post this story, at a time when your mother was recently unwell and in hospital. I hope your mother has recovered well from her traumatic injury.

Coming into hospital can be such a stressful experience, not only for our patients but also for their families/carers. Approach and communication are vital in the caring profession, not only to ensure that all your mother’s needs are met, but also that your needs as a family are met. The contact that the Dementia Companions have with family members to obtain life story information is crucial so that therapeutic interventions can be provided to their loved ones to alleviate any distress and to provide structure, routine and purpose to their day.

Person centred care is paramount within dementia care and this has been evidenced throughout your experience of Sheena. I am glad that the support Sheena offered your mother through effective communication and therapeutic activities was supportive not only to your mother, but also what you observed and received supported you as a family at this difficult time.

The ethos of the Dementia Companion Service is to strive to provide individualised care to people living with dementia while in our acute hospital care settings and it gives me great personal and professional satisfaction to read how Sheena has carried out her duties to a high standard, which resulted in a positive experience of being in hospital and provided 'excellent care for our mother'. It is unfortunate that the Dementia Companion Service was not available the last time your mother was in hospital, but it is great to hear that their was a visible difference with this service being utilised on this occasion and we will strive to progress this service throughout the acute setting.

May I thank you again for taking the time to share your experiences with is on Care Opinion.

Your feedback is very welcome to ensure safe, effective, compassionate and well led care is delivered and I will share this story with Sheena, which she and the rest of the Dementia Companion Team will be delighted to receive.

Best Wishes

Nicola
