"Trying to access GP services"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Accident & emergency General practices in Forth Valley

(as the patient),

Noticing my mental health declining after a withdrawal of medication I decided to call my local GP practice.

Patients must call at 8am -user busy... keep trying, by 9am finally get into the queue. By the time I manage to get through there are no appointments left and I'm told to call back the next day. One week passes of calling at 8am with no luck of gaining an appointment.

Conditions has now gotten worse, advised to seek help at the emergency room by GP reception staff because even if I was able to get through to book, I would still have to wait a further two weeks for an appointment! Even though I said it was urgent!

A&E forth valley, waited 8 hours in the emergency department to be handed a phone number to call the next morning AND to call back my GP! Called my GP again and was given an emergency appointment for the following week! Again another weeks wait, the day goes by and I receive a TEXT message in the evening, two minutes after the GP closing time, advising me my emergency appointment was cancelled and I was left the whole weekend worrying with stress and anxiety that I would never be seen, my condition now getting worse, vulnerable starting to have thoughts of what’s the point, no one cares to help.

Monday morning comes round again so I keep re-calling despite the busy notification on my phone after countless attempts at 20 past 8 I get into the Queue for an appointment.. again nothing available!! Two week wait time, best they can do is give an appointment with an in house pharmacist. Was advised they would be able to give me some medication (new medication) - asked twice so they were sure appointment booked for over the phone at the end of the week.

The time comes and goes, I ended up going into the surgery to be told the pharmacist wasn’t the right person to help me and someone should of phoned by now, I asked so what do I do? Who do I turn to? Told Emergency room at A&E.. I’ve been there and already been told no it’s the GP call back on Monday at 8am for an appointment.

By this point we are into the 3rd week of my condition detracting with no hope of an appointment.

The damage this is causing to people who are in desperate need of help and advice and your having to gamble every single morning for basic health care.

When people are already feeling helpless and giving up hope, the basic standard of care that they should be entitled to they can’t access so what’s the point is trying?

Dear Natalie33

Thank you for sharing with us your experience about trying to get an appointment at GP practice and I understand how frustrating and upsetting this will be for you. I know it will be disappointing for you, and you will feel that you are going round in circles trying to get an appointment.

To enable me to share you story with your practice, I would be grateful if you could contact me on 01324 566162 or alternatively by e-mail caroline.logan@nhs.scot. I would like to gather further information and find out which practice you are with.

I hope this is helpful and look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

Caroline
