I had abdominal surgery and the staff in the pre-assessment and the SEAL unit were very professional and helped me feel at ease. The Theatre staff were also amazing and kept me calm the whole way through.
However, I was disappointed when I was taken up to Ward 54. The staff were extremely busy that evening. After I had been taken to the ward, a couple of hours later I realised that I felt something lying on my foot and it had a pillow placed over the top of it. I asked my sister who was visiting if she could remove the pillow to see what it was. It was my saline drip which should have been rigged up next to me, but had been sitting at my feet for 2 hours. We called a nurse and they apologised and set it up. I still didn't think it was working correctly and had to ask another nurse to check it, they managed to fix the issue as it hadn't been dripping through.
I asked for pain relief when I got back from surgery around 5pm and never received this until the rounds at 10pm. Each time pain relief was offered, I had to ask for more than paracetamol. When I was discharged, I had to ask for pain relief home with me and dressings for my keyhole wounds, given it was Friday and I wanted to make sure I was covered for over the weekend. Again it felt like I shouldn't have been asking for this but I clearly needed it.
"I had to ask for pain relief"
