"Use of hospital resources"

About: Derriford Hospital / Accident and emergency Derriford Hospital / Cardiology Derriford Hospital / General medicine

(as a service user),

I recently spent 10 days in hospital. The operation I needed was clear after a day and a half and I had signed the consent form on the Friday. But it was not until the next Friday that I was able to be fitted in to the operation schedule. So I spent a week in a hospital bed, at considerable cost to the hospital and with detrimental effect on my health (from sleeplessness and poor diet).

I realise that the operating lists must prioritise according to urgency and can only function with the staff available – whose expertise may vary across the week for different operations, but is there not some other arrangement or scheduling that can make better use of hospital resources?

I am very sorry to hear about the delay to your procedure. I fully understand the effects that such delays have on our patients. From a cardiology point of view, the team try to arrange a patient’s care as soon as possible once it is identified that a cardiology bed is required. However, as you mention, we also have emergency admissions and these patients require monitoring. Unfortunately, without knowing the specific details of your admission, I do not know which operation you are referring to, as this dictates the area that needs to care for you.

Should you want me to investigate in more detail for you, please contact our Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS), quoting this reference number (PALS 76570) to provide your personal details so that we can link any future contact from you with this posting. PALS can be contacted on 01752 439884 or via email at plh-tr.PALS@nhs.net

Best Wishes
