"I am so grateful to all the staff caring for us both"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Maternity Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Neonatal Unit

(as a service user),

We had what should have been quite a traumatic labour/birth when in having our little girl however due to the amazing communication and professionalism we were made to feel at ease and in the know the whole way through.

We came in for induction, but due to how established I was, they were unable to use the pessary therefore was told I would just need to wait for a bed on labour ward to become available for the staff to be able to start the oxytocin drip.

My waters went that evening and I was transferred to labour ward. The staff were excellent the whole way through, so very attentive and nothing was too much trouble.

Due to our little girl's HR not changing and her not reacting to any sort of stimulation, the staff became concerned which meant I needed to go to theatre, this was communicated in a very calming way which made my partner feel very at ease (I was drunk on gas and air at the time).

Everyone in the theatre were amazing, they tried assisted delivery but this didn't work, and due to baby's HR dropping I had to have an emergency caesarean, again this was all handled very well and undertaken in a timely manner.

Our post-labour care could not have been any better, staff on both post natal ward and neonatal ward (our little girl had to spend 2 nights on ICU and remain under their care for 1 week) was exceptional. We built such a good rapport with all staff and they could not do enough for myself, my partner and most importantly our daughter.

If it wasn't for the staff involved in mine and my daughter's care, and infections weren't caught at such an early stage, we both would have been extremely poorly. I am so grateful to all the staff caring for us both.
