After my Dad fell ill, he was taken to Wishaw General. After arriving at A&E, we were asked to sit in the waiting room while the paramedics took my Dad into the ambulance entrance.
About 20 minutes later, a young volunteer shouted for the relatives of my Dad and escorted us into the A&E area. He explained that he was one of the volunteers working in A&E that day and assured us that my Dad was in good hands with the nursing staff. He offered my Dad food and drink, which he declined, and made sure my Dad was comfortable.
He even went out of his way and found a chair for my sister, who had been standing for about 20 minutes while no one got her chair. Although we declined his offer for a cup of tea, his kindness didn't go unnoticed.
He saw I was upset and took the time to explain the care plan for my Dad, which really eased my worries. When I asked what made him want to volunteer he shared his ambition to go to paramedic school. I asked if he enjoyed working in A&E, he said he loved it and got to meet many new people.
Despite this young boy’s youth, he demonstrated remarkable knowledge and confidence in assisting not only my Dad but also other patients. He was well-informed about each patient and was able to fill staff in when they needed something. This boy is commendable!
I sincerely hope he recognises the positive impact he had on us and reaches his potential as an amazing paramedic.
