"Errors compounded by not listening"

About: The Old School Medical Practice

(as a service user),

I saw the GP in late 2022 due to severe pain from arthritis. Was told I would be referred to local district hospital. Referral recorded on my on-line patient notes.

Waited whilst symptoms got worse assuming delay was due to national NHS backlog. By early 2024 still no appointment. Inquiry made to practice. Told to contact hospital direct & given phone number. Phone number unobtainable. Unable to get through to correct department via hospital switchboard so emailed hospital PALs. PALs very helpful & investigated. Discovered GP had never made referral.

Contacted GP who then investigated & confirmed referral never made due to human error.

Explained extent of symptoms, by now pain constant and additional symptoms preventing everyday activities. Was told referral would be made to hospital as matter of urgency. Online records indicated referral made.

Also told to have full range of blood tests, no explanation for these tests given.

GP then said hospital had requested pictures illustrating my arthritis, no explanation why given.  Send pics to GP & explained difficult to get pics illustrating impact. Got reply from GP saying inconclusive & that GP didn’t want to waste my time by asking me to go to surgery. Replied to GP again explaining extent of symptoms including constant pain throughout skeleton. Unclear whether pics forwarded to hospital.
