"Breastfeeding support"

About: Highland Community Services / Breastfeeding Support Service

(as a service user),

After having a very successful breastfeeding journey with my first baby, I was looking forward to experiencing this again with my second. Unfortunately me and baby struggled with finding our feet in the first few weeks. I felt deflated and my confidence was knocked a bit. I was aware of the feeding support worker service but was hesitant to reach out as I felt I should know how to troubleshoot myself from previous experience.

A few weeks in I decided to contact Lana to discuss where improvements could be made. Lana is so friendly and passionate about her job. I couldn’t have felt less of a burden. Lana was clearly very knowledgeable and explained all advice in simple terms. Lana was able to demonstrate positioning to improve my baby’s latch and advice on how to prevent issues in the future. Lana kept in contact with weekly check ins and was also a huge help when I decided to express milk as she was able to advise schedules and methods as well as guidance on safe storage.

I also regularly attend the baby group held by the team and look forward to this as it is such a friendly and relaxed environment where I can discuss any queries which have rose through the week without fear of judgement!

Dear Doradofq34,

Congratulations on the birth of your baby and thank you so much for telling your story of your breastfeeding journey. You have highlighted a very important aspect of feeding a second baby especially the expectation that following a very successful breastfeeding journey that the second or subsequent will follow suit. I am so sorry that things didn't get off to a good start for you, but delighted that you reached out and got support from Lana. She is a fantastic part of our team and I will pass this onto her as I am sure she will be absolutely delighted to hear that you found her to be friendly, passionate, knowledgeable and supportive.

It is lovely how you have highlighted to the range of support that our infant feeding support workers offer and how they have no cut off to when that support ends. I am glad to read you had weekly checkins and that you are finding the group a friendly and relaxed environment to go to.

Thank you again for sharing your story

Kind regards

Karen Mackay
