"Helped me on my feeding journey"

About: Highland Community Services / Breastfeeding Support Service

(as a service user),

I’ve had help from the infant feeding support workers since my baby was a newborn (he has now just turned 5 months).

Elise, Victoria and Terri have all helped me in some way on my feeding journey. I’ve also had help from Karen and Arlene.

Before I had my baby I wasn’t sure breastfeeding was going to be for me but after having him, the support I had from the nursing nurses from Rhona in particular and then the infant feeding support workers allowed me to exclusively breastfeed for 9 weeks. I then had to add formula top ups for weight gain around week 9 but breast feeding still provides the majority of milk for my baby.

Louie had tongue tie which was detected by the team. He had it released and unfortunately it hasn’t improved but the girls have supported me with this.

I really can’t put in to words in the time I have to provide this feedback (while my baby naps) just how valuable their work has been for me as a new mum. I love feeding my baby myself and I don’t think I’d have managed without them. They helped me when I struggled with positioning, expressing, when Louie was becoming fussy feeding, the list goes on. They also run a lovely group for breastfeeding mums and clava which I enjoyed going to for support but also to see other mums.

Dear Louise23,

Congratulations firstly on the birth of your wee boy and thank you so much for taking the time to tell your story of your breastfeeding journey so far.

What a wonderful achievement to be breastfeeding at 5 months and I am so happy to read that you have been supported by the Inverness IFSW team - Terri, Elise and Victoria will be delighted to know that they have made a different and I will send them this. I will also send to Rhona and her manager as it is lovely to recognise the input that the nursery nurses have on feeding and early relationships also and I will send to Arlene to - I am sure they will all be delighted.

Louise you have described quite a complex journey and I am sorry that the tongue tie snip didn't make a huge difference to your feeding journey but it is just reassuring to see the support you have been given to keep breastfeeding and love it so much. The support group at Clava sounds like a great group and it is so reassuring to hear this and see how it benefits you

Thank you again for sharing your story

Kind regards

Karen Mackay
