"I could have gone straight through there"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as a service user),

I arrived at A&E. on sun 25th Feb early afternoon..

I thought the whole idea of Minor Injuries, was so that you didn't have to go through A&E? it was very busy, with folk with all kind of things. I had a suspected broken thumb. Felt a bit daft in A&E.

I had gone through the whole NHS 111 thing. I had explained what happened, several times. Spoke to 3 folk. It seemed a lot of 'waste' of resources. It would be better to have the question 'Do you suspect that you have broken something?' … then straight to MI?

In the telephone choices, I had to pick, 'do you feel unwell?'...which is totally different? Minor Injuries, was supposed to be where you go, with cuts or suspected broken bones?

After 3hr30mins wait, I finally got round to a Minor Injuries, seen by nurse, x rayed, back to nurse in 10mins. Luckily, it wasnt broken. But i could have gone straight through there? I thought the whole idea, was that they were separate and you weren't wasting A&E resources? All seemed rather topsy turvy to me.

The care itself, was excellent. And I have an appt to check for ligament damage on Mon, so again excellent care. Just feel you let a great idea with MI down. But thanks for great care.

Dear runningtj39

Thank you for highlighting your post on Care Opinion. I'm glad to hear the care you received was excellent and that your injury was addressed with appropriate follow up.

I am sorry that the process into our Minor Injuries area was not better explained at the time. Our Minor Injuries operates alongside our Emergency Department and is staffed staffed separately. The waiting area is shared which can appear confusing. Again, I apologise that this was not better explained when you registered at reception.

I intend to use your post to reinforce with my colleagues the importance of awareness being highlighted as to how the Minor Injuries area specifically at RAH operates. I will also ensure that our existing signage in the waiting area better captures this.

Thank you for raising your concern and allowing me to look at this on behalf of the team.

Wishing you a swift recovery from your injury.

Gerry
