"Gone above and beyond to support our son"

About: Children's Specialist Health Services / Paediatric Diabetes Team

(as a parent/guardian),

My son was diagnosed in March 2018. We have had a difficult journey, lots of ups and downs. Especially as my son battles with huge worries and anxiety. This has had a big impact on his social and school life as well as his family as a whole. Dealing with my son's many many high and low blood sugars, the mood swings and generally feeling unwell for most of the time has brought so much worry and stress to the whole family. So many sleepless nights dealing with hypos has made us a very tired family!

The whole diabetes team have always been very supportive not just to our son but the whole family! He has been offered to be put on the waiting list for a pump a few times as he really needed this not only for his health at present but for his future. His sugar levels being so all over the place was inevitably going to have an impact on future complications as he grows older, which as his mum terrifies me! Due to our son's anxiety towards change he was proving very reluctant to have the pump, not knowing how we could help him was unbearable!

One of the team (Fiona) has gone above and beyond to support our son through understanding the whole pump process.  Supporting not just his diabetes but his mental health. Her patience , understanding and caring has been so appreciated! She has managed to support both our son and our family through the whole pump process.  He has only been on the pump since the end of January and this difference has been amazing! His sugar level has sat in range the majority of the time which we haven't had since diagnosis! We have seen such an improvement in his moods and energy, we can see our happy boy coming back! We could not have got this far without the incredible support we have received from Fiona and we are so so grateful. We were told the pump would make a difference to his life but we didn't realise just how much.

We have an older son who was diagnosed in 2002 and the pump was not available for him at the time. Seeing the difference this has made to our son's life I believe and pray that the pump system should be offered to every child to ensure they can all have the best opportunity for a good quality life with diabetes.

Again we express our gratitude to the Lanarkshire paediatric diabetes team for all the ongoing support.  We are so grateful our son has been given the opportunity to have the pump.

Thank you

Thank you for sharing your story and feedback of your son's journey having Type 1 diabetes.

It has obviously been a worrying few years for you both and I am so pleased to hear about the positive outcome following his recent start on insulin pump therapy.

I am reassured that you felt supported and understood by the nurses and the care received was kind, compassionate and empathetic.

I will personally share your feedback and thanks to Fiona and the other members of the Team and I would like to wish your son well for the future.
