"The staff were all cheerful and that helped settle me"

About: Royal Victoria Hospital / Endoscopy Unit

(as the patient),

I recently had 2 ERCP procedures at the Endoscopy unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital. I would like to compliment the staff there for their professionalism and efficiency in looking after me on those two occasions.

The staff were all cheerful and that helped settle me. Special mention to Nurse Darling who was fantastic in the way she took care of me during prep both times and while I underwent the procedure (second time). She's an absolute credit to the hospital.

I would mention that while I was given sedation on the second occasion, it didn't seem to have the same effect as the first occasion when I remembered nothing and recalled no discomfort. Second time around, I had the retching which was unpleasant and I was awake/aware for much of the time I think.

Good evening,

Thanks so much for taking the time to leave us some feedback about your recent visit to RVH endoscopy for your ERCPs. Can I begin by apologising for the delay in getting back to you. We truly value the opinions of all our patients so I am sorry that we have not responded to you before now.

I am so glad that a lot of your experience was positive. I will be sure to pass on your kind words to the team and especially to Darling. I am glad that she was able to support you before and after your ERCPs as I know coming for these procedures can be a very worrying time.

I am sorry that you didn't feel as comfortable for your second procedure. This can be due to a number of reasons such as increased anxiety, a different endoscopist administering the drugs, a challenging procedure, etc. We do our vey best to ensure all our patients are as comfortable as possible during their procedures so I am very disappointed to hear this was not the case for you. I apologise.

I will take these comments back to the team as a reminder to us all that it is our job to support our patients through their procedure in the most comfortable way possible whilst keeping safety at the forefront of our minds too Sometimes procedures are so complex or lengthy that is difficult to maintain the comfort levels as there are safe limitations to the amount of sedation we can give. I will however remind staff to advocate for their patients and monitor comfort level so as to inform the endoscopist if we think our patients are in discomfort.

Thanks again for getting in touch and I wish you all the best for the future.

Kind Regards

Heather
