"I love the service that they provide"

About: Waterside Hospital / Ward 3 Western Health & Social Care Trust / Dementia companion service

(as a relative),

Participated in colouring in and other arts and crafts, this was taken by Madeline and Thomas from the Dementia Companion Service.

My Nana thoroughly enjoys the activities and time with spent with Madeline, she finds it very therapeutic and loves listening to the music played as it allows her to reminisce. She has said she is very comfortable around the companion team and it passes the time easily.

I love the service that they provide and I think it is of a real benefit to my Nana.

Dear Derry24

My name is Nicola Hayes, and my substantive post is Dementia Service Improvement Lead for the acute hospitals and I manage the Dementia Companion Team.

Thank you for sharing the positive experience that your Nana and your family had of the journey through Ward 3 Waterside Hospital and in particular with the Dementia Companion Team, namely Madelyn and Thomas.

Person centred care is paramount within dementia care and this has been evidenced throughout your experience of Madelyn and Thomas. I am glad that the support they offered your Nana through effective communication and therapeutic activities was supportive not only to your Nana, but also what you observed supported you as a family at this time.

I am delighted that you had the experience of the Dementia Companion Team and the role they can play to people living with dementia who are admitted to hospital. I will share this post with the Dementia Companion, which they will be delighted to receive.

Your feedback is very welcome to ensure safe, effective, compassionate and well led care is delivered.

Kind regards

Nicola
