I have been attending the Macular Unit for several months being treated for retinal vein occlusion. I have been informed in writing and with online reminders of my appointments. As well as being contacted about a change of time for one appt due to a staffing issue.
I have been kept informed at all stages of my treatment from my initial consultation to my most recent appt. All members of staff have been terrific in their attitude, care, competence and advice. The receptionists are friendly and informed, which sets the tone for the patient. I have no other serious health/mobility issues but I have watched the nursing staff’s patience and care with others. I am in awe of their positive attitude in what is a very busy department. They deal with those who have difficulty hearing or are unaccompanied with genuine care, usually referring to them by name etc. I have no hesitation in saying it is an excellent service.
Naturally patients, who are often elderly, can be apprehensive about hospitals and treatment but the staff are very reassuring. I have never seen a member of staff from reception, technical, nursing or medical show any sign of being under pressure despite their demanding roles. We are all too aware of the ongoing challenges facing the NHS but in my experience the Macular Unit runs smoothly and efficiently despite the demand. I am very appreciative of the care I am receiving- I have nothing but praise for all who work there!
If I had to be nit picking it would be that the accommodation is quite cramped at busy times, but the upshot of that is chatting and sharing with other patients!
