"Lack of empathy at follow up mammogram"

About: Derriford Hospital / Breast surgery

(as a relative),

My mother was called in to the Primrose Unit for a follow up mammogram appointment following breast cancer. She was very worried and in pain (which we have been told is residual radiotherapy).

A staff member called her through and as my mother uses a white stick due to blindness, asked how much my mother could see. My mother said that she could see very little and the staff member said "Oh well, its not far" and didn't offer any assistance.

During the procedure, my mother informed them about her pain and was told: "well what do you expect, it wont take long."  My mother was told to change and go back to reception and no help was offered despite my mother being clearly upset. She felt the staff member had no bedside manner.

The receptionist on the other hand should be recommended for a best staff award for her calmness and friendliness, offering us a cup of tea and tissues.

I feel very strongly about what happened and distressed that I feel the need to put in a complaint.
