I was trying to establish breastfeeding with my first born, with zero experience of babies and no family support nearby. We had a fairly difficult birth and both the baby and I were in pain during the important early weeks. Breastfeeding was sore, stressful and relentless.
NHS Highland provide help through the Infant Feeding Support team - home visits and drop-in groups, and this is vital once you get home from hospital and are flying solo!
One to one support is so vital in those early weeks as you adjust to a gruelling 2/3 hour schedule, on no sleep and in physical recovery. Knowing there is an expert support network available locally is hugely helpful and comforting. The team are experienced, kind and proactive - checking in when you might be feeling too down or shy to ask for help yet again.
I definitely couldn’t have continued breastfeeding without their support.
