"B12 deficiency"

About: GPs in Waltham Forest

(as a service user),

With classic symptoms I was quickly diagnosed with a B12 deficiency during Covid times. I was prescribed loading dose injections, but less than the guidelines stated and was then put on three monthly top ups. The loading doses stopped the headaches and malaise but did not stop the pins and needles in my hands and feet which got progressively worse.

I started looking up treatment and realised I was not receiving sufficient B12 injections but the doctor would not listen and said these things took time and all the while the pins and needles worsened and moved up my arms and legs.

In the end I took to treating myself with additional B12 and the pins and needles retreated except in my toes where I now have permanent nerve damage. Because of this I no longer sleep more than one or two hours at a time even with gabapentin for the nerve pain and discomfort .

I believe that if the doctor had followed the guidelines and continued the B12 loading doses this would not have happened and I would not have permanent nerve damage .There seems to be great ignorance in the medical profession about B12 deficiency
