"My father's experience"

About: Blackpool Victoria Hospital / Gastroenterology

(as a relative),

My father was in this ward, thank god he has been moved.

He walked in to the hospital being unable to take himself to the toilet, within a few weeks he was wearing pads and in his bed when I visited him, he would ask me for a bottle, not one to be found, I used to go and help myself to one. I told him to ask for one, he told me he was told by staff you are wearing a pad do it in that (fuming now).

On another occasion I went in his hands were covered in old faeces, where my mum decided she would wash him and shave him after keep getting umpteen infections (surprised not).

He was moved to a side ward where things just got worse, he stopped eating and drinking, went in to a depression, I feel they gave him up for dead twice, as a family we're still none the wiser what is medically wrong, at this stage both his arms and around his neck are covered in bruises, so glad for mobile phone as I kept a diary of everything .

I could go on about things in that ward but my father has moved wards and is doing a lot better but will never be the same man.

When I did my nurse training the patient was the important one, not standing outside the patient room on your mobile phone or talking about what you got up to last night.
