"They scared me so much I said no to the operation"

About: Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary / Ophthalmology Golden Jubilee National Hospital / Orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I have recently been to the Golden Jubilee Hospital in Clydebank for a consultation with a foot doctor. I need an operation but they scared me so much I said no to the operation. They told me I would have no feelings in my two toes, could lead to gangrene and/or sepsis. I felt there was a lot of excitement when I said I did not want the operation.

The same thing happened to my husband at Dumfries and Galloway Hospital when he needed an eye operation. They said to him he may go blind with the operation so he refused.

Is this an NHS ploy to cut back on operations? Disgusted.

Dear Memberkh83

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us following your recent experience at the Golden Jubilee Hospital (GJNH). I was sorry to read that during your consultation with the foot doctor at GJNH the information they provided you regarding the risks involved with an operation caused you upset.

With every operation, the doctor must discuss and explain all the risks and benefits associated with an operation. This is done to provide you with the opportunity to discuss any concerns and to confirm you have a full understanding before signing a consent form for surgery. This would be the similar process that would have followed when providing your husband with the information he required his eye operation.

I am sorry that your experience has left you feeling scared and upset and should you wish to discuss this further and allow us to learn more about your concerns, I would urge you to reach out to the Patient Experience Team at the Golden Jubilee Hospital on the contact details below:

Patient Services

Email - feedback@gjnh.scot.nhs.uk

Telephone - 0141 951 5951

If you need support communicating with services, you can access free, confidential, independent support and advice from Dumfries and Galloway Advocacy Service. More details are available on their website at https://www.dgadvocacy.co.uk/.

I hope that the above is helpful and that you feel able to contact us so we can support you further. Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience with us.

Kind regards

Jamie Cottrell

Dear Memberkh83,

I am very sorry to read of your experience with our team during your clinic appointment. It would appear the information the team provided to you would be the risks and complications, of which they are required to discuss with patients. I am sorry to read that have now chosen not to go ahead with your surgery. It if would help in any way, I would be more than happy to speak to you regarding this. My contact number is 0141 951 5951.

Regards

Paula
