"Post Covid"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Respiratory Western Health & Social Care Trust / Post Covid Syndrome Service

(as the patient),

I tested positive for Covid-19 towards the end of 2020, before the vaccines were available. Didn't get it too bad, more like a bad flu, the following weeks I started to develop chest pains and a shortness of breath and no energy. The shortness of breath was quite bad and really effected my daily life.

I had to wait a long time before the NHS were convinced that I had a problem both physically and mentally, probably through no fault of their own as the medical people I was seeing had no experience of my symptoms.

I got numerous tests carried out, both cardic and respiratory, and all showing that basically there was nothing medically wrong with me.

I eventually had an appointment with a top respiratory consultant who went through in great detail all my symptoms, tests, scans etc and nothing showed anything medically wrong with me.  The only conclusion we came up with was that my symptoms had developed from the effects of Covid.

I was then referred to the Post Covid clinic (after a further year) which I attended towards the end of 2023.

The clinic was made up of about of approximately 14 people all with similar if not worse symptoms than myself. It was a great experience to speak to other people regarding how they coped with the condition etc.

The clinic was run over a six week period going through physical exercises, breathing exercises and general discussions.

I can now confirm that after (dealing with post Covid for 3 years) a few months from attending the clinic I now feel like a new person, back to my normal self.

Many thanks to all the team that helped in any way.

Tobby, thank you for taking the time to share your experience with Covid19 and Post Covid Syndrome. We apologise for the length of time you were required to wait until being referred to our service and subsequently offered an initial appointment. However, I hope you can appreciate that we are a small team managing a large volume of referrals across a wide geographical area.

I am delighted to hear that you enjoyed your time at the post covid rehab programme. When this programme was initially set up, it was done so with the hope that service users of all ages and with all functional abilities could come together in a safe environment and receive peer support under the guidance of our health professionals. Your report of a full recovery reinforces the benefits of this group programme. As the research surrounding Post Covid Syndrome recovery supports a self-management model, you must also commend yourself for taking the education and advice on board and implementing the strategies recommended by our health professionals.

Your feedback is greatly appreciated and we wish you well for the future.

Ellen McGonigle
