"Counselling for my daughter"

About: Primary Mental Health Care Services / Primary Mental Health Care

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter became very ill during Covid. She had just turned 18 and I was not allowed to attend any appointments with her. She was dismissed by doctor after doctor for months and told she was suffering from anxiety or questioned if she had been using drugs. To cut a very long story short, she ended up needing a pacemaker as her heart was pausing.

After her operation in 2022 my daughter suffered extreme grief, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and complete anxiety due to the fact that no one listened to her. I felt helpless, angry, sad and heart broken for my daughter.

I tried many times and through many avenues to get counselling for my daughter but nothing worked, until one day, I'd say the worst day for me, we were referred to the lovely person who supported, encouraged and helped my daughter over a five month period to accept, adjust and recognise her triggers to anxiety. All I can say is I am so thankful to her to now have my daughter back, her gentle caring nature oozes with concern and passion and it is this that has helped not only my daughter and I, but our whole family to return to some sort of a normality after all this trauma.

I will be forever grateful!

Dear moonmt98

Thank you for taking time to share your experience with us.

My name is Leah-Ann, I am the Primary Mental Health Care coordinator for Adult Mental Health Services.

I am sorry to read that your daughter was so unwell and your experience in those early days unhelpful.

It is encouraging to read that your daughter has received the support and encouragement she required from the primary mental health care worker, and with such compassion.

I am so glad to hear that your daughter, yourself and the wider family have benefited from the support provided.

I will ensure that teams receive this feedback and wish your daughter continued progress in her recovery journey.

Best Wishes

Leah-Ann Shanks
