"The care and understanding was a true blessing"

About: Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / 23 Hour Unit ( Ward 1A)

(as a parent/guardian),

My son was in for a tonsillectomy, an adenoidectomy and grommets. He had to stay in for 3 nights and from the moment he was taken in until we were discharged, we were treated with the greatest care from everybody we were in contact with.

The constant care and understanding from every member of staff was a true blessing and we were amazed at the level of individual care each child received from all the nurses and the additional ward staff round the clock. The medical care from the doctors and nurses made us feel confident at all times and we were never left wondering about anything or left with questions we weren’t able to ask. The time was always made for us, which was great.

From my son’s point of view, he was treated with such care and attention from the moment he arrived. At no point was he apprehensive or worried being without his mum or dad. The staff made sure we were with him until he closed his eyes and were there as soon as he opened them. The whole process runs so smoothly. I would like to say an additional thank you for all the emotional support I feel I received as a parent as well. Such an understanding, caring and supportive ward of staff that made a stressful event for a parent as comforting as possible. I genuinely am very grateful for that.

For all the staff who brought food, cups of teas, games/ books and films for the kids - thank you also. This is an incredible addition and I know that it made it a lot easier for my son to stay in longer than planned because of the games he was given and the playdoh and Lego he was gifted as well. The playroom was also a welcome distraction once he was feeling a bit better.

Nobody wants to have to spend time in hospital with their child but I have to say that ward 1A made this as comfortable an experience as I would have hoped for and we as a family as very grateful for that and for everything that was done for our son.
