"Abscess operation"

About: Victoria Hospital / Discharge Hub

(as a service user),

I was a bit disappointed. It’s usually amazing the service and care but this time I wasn’t offered painkillers, one time I did ask I had to wait 2 hours. I lay on my own for hours at a time with no updates and no sense of urgency at all. I appreciate the NHS are busy but to not have any contact from anyone other than get my blood pressure etc taken I felt was poor. Once I’d had my operation I didn’t see anyone other than the catering staff. I saw one member of staff who went to get my sick note as “it was ready” I didn’t see him again and it turned out he’d gone home. The girl he handed over to kept saying my letter was on its way but this went on for a couple of hours until I just asked to be discharged as I felt ok. There was no advice for aftercare, no painkillers or anything given or pads for my wound. I then had to go to a gp surgery and make my own way(the day after an operation which just doesn’t sit right with me). To this point I still don’t have a discharge letter or doctors line to sign me off despite having asked if it could be emailed. I had an abscess for over a week before I was admitted despite getting an urgent MRI scan a week before. Usually the operation is done urgently if it’s an abscess. By the time I got the operation I was quite unwell. I just feel disappointed overall and just want my discharge letter and sick line.

Dear Craigieboy

My name is Siobhan McIlroy and I am the Head of Patient Experience. NHS Fife welcomes all feedback, so thank you for taking the time to post on Care Opinion. I am sorry for the delay in you receiving a response.

I am sorry that your recent experience has been disappointing and you were not advised of any aftercare, painkillers or dressings and you were not happy with the communication and interactions with the nursing team.

If you want to send your details via email to siobhan.mcilroy@nhs.scot or theresa.rodigan1@fife.nhs.scot, providing your name and date of birth, we can try to support you with the discharge letter and sick line and to try to understand what went wrong. As Care Opinion is anonymous please add the heading "Abscess operation" into the sub heading of the email so we know which Care Opinion post you are contacting us about.

Thank you again for sharing your story, and I hope you are recovering well.

Best wishes and take care, Siobhan
