"Car Park facilities"

About: The Ulster Hospital / Craig Ward (Paediatrics)

(as a relative),

Whoever thought it would be a good idea to place A&E UHD at the furthest point from the main car parks? I know there is a car park nearby which is fantastic if you are seen at A&E and then discharged, however on Saturday evening my little granddaughter was admitted to the Children's Craig Ward which is still and will be for the foreseeable future in the old building at the front of the Hospital.

My daughter needed to get a few things from her car which was parked at the A&E car park and wanted to move her car to a more convenient area for when she would be discharged from the ward. As this was around midnight, the main doors in the old building where closed and you can no longer exit at minor injuries which used to be A&E. So she had to exit at the multistorey car park exit which was a long walk from the ward and involved 2 lifts, a walk outside in the dark past the new wards, up around the back of the hospital, past the new A&E and down the hill to the car park.

Eventually she moved her car to the multistorey as the front car parks had no access at that time of the night back into the old building. This now means when she is discharged she has a toddler and bags to juggle while walking past the closest car park to children's wards.

I hear you ask why did she not return to A&E internally...you can't as the doors close and only staff have access with a fob, not the public!

On her return I then left the ward and had the same walk to do. It was dark and eerie as there was no one about, surely there has to be an easier way around this?

Perhaps paediatric A&E should be in the old building. This has to have had an impact on Dr's who have a long walk from the children's wards to see sick patients in A&E...What happens if there is an emergency on the ward while they are in A&E? There are locked double doors which they can access, the use of 2 lifts, all taking time to maneuver on their return.

Could one of the car parks at the front could be designated for Paeds & Maternity ?

Thank you for sharing the story of your family’s experience regarding parking proximity to ED / Paediatrics services at Ulster Hospital.

I hope that your granddaughter recovers quickly and keeps well going forward.

I fully empathise with your points raised regarding difficulties encountered due to current arrangements and I appreciate your suggestions as to how improvement may be achieved.

I have connected with service leadership to raise your points for consideration across ED / Paediatrics / Car Parking / Estates fronts and will update you based on their collective consideration and response.

Again, I thank you for sharing your story and the learning / improvement opportunity afforded to us through this.

Best wishes

Conor
