"My labour and birth experience"

About: Maternity care / Post-Natal wards (E and Johnston house) Maternity care / Theatre

(as the patient),

My labour process began in the delivery suite at the Royal Maternity. It was an induction of labour via a drip due to having gestational diabetes. The beginning of my labour experience was amazing, I had the most incredible midwife, who was so attentive, kind and reassuring. She not only took care of me but also looked after and provided tea and toast for my two birthing partners. She really made me feel relaxed and empowered.

However, once this first midwife left I was introduced to a new midwife, who unfortunately didn’t carry on this positive experience. She left me to continue my labour process alone and was only in and out of the room about 5 times the whole time I was in her care. I was extremely distressed and angry at this point at this, especially as after my cervical check I had not dilated what’s so ever and a c section was becoming more of a reality. Which I voiced I was extremely anxious and worried about the idea of a section and was extremely tearful but I felt there was no sympathy or empathy from her and left me to labour another 4 hours until I got another check to say I was still not dilated at all and a c section had become my reality. I was so upset and felt I did not have a support system from her as my midwife. I had actually unfortunately wet myself whilst being in the bed during the labour process and it was my two birth partners that had to help me out of bed, to toilet and help me change my pad as the second midwife was no where to be seen. Very disappointed. Plus when I went for my section it was the anaesthetist that had to calm me down in theatre and reassure me as the midwife was in the corner chatting away.

Once I was brought back from the delivery suite she was there for a max 15 mins and disappeared, I didn’t not see her at all after and it was then the day staff I seen.
